These include choosing energy efficient appliances, using environmentally friendly building products, how much solar gain you can achieve, insulation, double glazing and of course, heating.  If it can be demonstrated that a product will save you more per annum than the current cost of borrowed money, then it is definitely worth incorporating into your new home for long term savings.
