Solar Water Heating
Solar Water Heating is one of the system extras offered by Central Heating New Zealand. Solar is generally only considered for heating a domestic hot water cylinder. Heating your house with solar is possible however it only contributes a small amount to home heating and needs to be backed up by other heat sources to supplement the solar energy.
Solar energy can be used very successfully for heating domestic water for new and existing homes, swimming pools and spas. You can save up to 98% of your water heating costs during summer and up to 50% in winter. The more water you use the more you save.
Using solar for house heating
In special circumstances, by using a large amount of solar collectors to heat a very large cylinder (or thermal store) we can transfer this water into a heating system such as radiators or underfloor. This solar input can usually only put in up to 20% of the heating system requirements and the rest needs to be achieved with another heat source. This type of system is very capital intensive, however it is possible.
