Frequently Asked Questions

A. Very efficient. Everyone is concerned about efficiency. We need to use the word ‘effective’ in conjunction with ‘efficient’ when talking about a heating system. There is no point in installing a very efficient unit that doesn’t actually warm you or the room.

Central Heating systems are efficient and very effective when designed and installed correctly. They are proven the world over as the best system possible. Different fuel types have different costs so this needs to be considered too.

Go to the Energy Efficiency page for more info.
A. Each has its benefits. There is nothing like the luxury of underfloor systems but radiators have a faster response and can react quickly to New Zealands weather conditions. We often install underfloor in the living areas and radiators in the bedroom areas, as a combination is often the best solution.
Go to the Heat Distribution page.
A. Water is pumped around the radiator or underfloor system. The system is sealed so no water is consumed once the system is filled. The water is treated with an anti corrosive agent and sometimes an antifreeze agent.
A. 1. Central heating can use a variety of heat sources (like gas, diesel, wood pellets, and geothermal energy) whereas with most heating you can only use electricity. With central heating, you can also change out your heat source in the future if there are changes to the supply or cost of fuel.

2. Water transfers energy at 4 times the rate of air, making warm water central heating so much more efficient than warm air systems.

3. Radiant heat (Eg. From a radiator or under floor heating in a central heating system) is so much more comfortable to the human body than forced air. Warm air systems such as heat pumps are also drafty, noisy and there are often cold spots. None of these things happen with a warm water central heating system. It is just warm & comfortable, all the time!
A. Because there is no forced air flow, central heating is perfect for people with respiratory or allergy problems. We have even had customers’ comment that their asthma almost completely disappeared after the first winter with central heating! There are also no naked flames or elements to be a danger to children or the elderly.

A warm, dry home is a healthy home. Putting central heating in an old house should eliminate up to 80% of condensation problems. The heating system will dry out the structure of the home because dry air condenses less than damp air.
A. What price is comfort? Our customers are amazed by the warmth of their homes with central heating and can’t believe that they lived so long without it. Yes, it is a cheaper start-up cost to have one heater/log burner in the living room and a scattering of electric fan heaters throughout the house, but it isn’t an effective way to heat your home. And, with the soaring price of electricity, isn’t it wiser to consider alternative fuel sources?

A gas central heating system with radiators in a small 3 bedroom house starts at approximately $10,000 installed. Compare this with one heat pump in the living room (approximately $4,000 installed) and another in the master bedroom (another $4,000 installed). So for $8,000 you can heat 2 rooms, or for $10,000 you can heat your whole house? The choice is obvious! Go to the How Much Does it Cost page for more information.
A. Each house has its own heat loss characteristics. We calculate the heat required to achieve at least 21 degrees in living areas and 17 degrees in bedrooms. We then know the kilowatt demand of the house. We can work out how much it will cost to run on different fuel types. Go to the How Much Does it Cost page for more information.
A. Yes, you could run several radiators from a log burner with a wetback. If the wetback is currently heating a domestic hot water cylinder, and you wish this to continue also, the cylinder would have to be modified to separate the water going to the radiators from the water going to the cylinder. This is because the rust generated by the water in the steel radiators would infiltrate the potable/drinking water in the cylinder.
If it was for a new installation, you could get a cylinder that already had this coil or heat exchanger in it.
A. It is the most exciting development in heating! Because it uses the earth’s energy to heat and cool your home, fuel costs are non-existent. It is a future-focused way to heat your home because geothermal energy is a renewable resource.
